Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the Fun In Athletics Regional Sportshall Championships that took place on Saturday 22 February 2014…………

4 teams of year 5 and 6 athletes travelled to Wellsway School Sports Centre at Keynsham for the Fun In Athletics Regional Sportshall Championships. Despite a number of last minute changes all the athletes competed with enthusiasm and determination.

There were many awesome performances in both individual and team events. Of note was the performance of the boys “B” Team - The Somerset Saracens, who competed with a team of only 9 athletes, 3 below the minimum recommended number, which meant that all the athletes took part in the maximum number of permitted events, often dashing from one event to the next without a break! With a depleted team they finished in 6th place with only 31 points separating them from the Gloucestershire B Team.

The Girls “B” Team - The Somerset Spartans, also badly affected by last minute changes put in a great effort for 5th place with only 16 points separating them from the Avon B Team.

The Girls “A” Team - The Somerset Spartans, produced a brilliant performance to finish 2nd behind the Avon A Team with a points difference of only 5!

The Boys “A” Team - The Somerset Spartans , affected by late withdrawals finished in 3rd place behind the Avon A and Gloucestershire A Teams who tied for 1st place - another great result!

Championship best performances amongst the girls came from: Jessica F  who was placed 1st in Standing Long Jump with a distance of 2.02m; Sasha H came 1st in Javelin with a best throw of 15.0m; Evie O, Charlotte T and Grace P all tied for 1st place in the balance test with a maximum score of 60; Tejah M was 1st with a Chest Push Throw of 6.0m; Ciara A was 1st in the Target Throw and Vertical Jump with scores of 8 and 50cm respectively.

Championship best performances amongst the boys came from: Will S who was placed 1st in the Standing Triple Jump with a distance of 6.12m; Marky J who came 1st in both Javelin and Speed Bounce with best performances of 23.0m and 57 bounces respectively.

Other performances of note were from: Maddy O who came 3rd in Speed Bounce with a score of 56; Harvey H who came 3rd in Triple Jump with a distance of 5.58m Aiden D who came 3rd= in Target Throw with a score of 10; Obi E who came 2nd in Vertical Jump with 45cm; Alistar A came 3rd= in Target Throw with a score of 10.

In the track events the Girls achieved one first place, 5 second places and 3 third places; and the Boys were 3rd in 6 events.

Finally, thanks to everyone who helped as Team Managers, Officials and Scribes, and of course to the parents etc for taking the athletes to the event and for their support and encouragement.
